Day 80 (Part One)

Oddasee Connoisseurs,

So, have you heard of Sheboygan, Wisconsin? We have but are not sure why. Is it the odd sounding moniker? It's fun to say and easy to to spell (unlike Applepesicola, FL). We simply had no answer to such a mystery. Now, we have a much better idea why anyone interested in the arts not only needs to know about Sheboygan but must find a way to visit.

In the pleasant and vibrant town there are the expected resorts along Lake Michigan and the typical Main St. that seems to be in the middle of revitalization. There are some nice little restaurants and shops. People are friendly and there are beautiful parks and homes on every street. Al these things are significantly enhanced by one remarkable institution -- The James Michael Kohler Art Center.

This art venue is on par with the Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore. The main focus is on outsider, naive and visionary art. However, they have a strong contemporary art bent as well. The buildings are a combination of new architecture and a mansion built in 1883. The morphing of these two very different structures is seamless, complimentary and unique. The galleries are incredible. The current exhibitions are fantastic! We we're surprised by the quality and quantity of art in every display space. Alas, no photography in the galleries (okay I snuck one - "kohler museum #5. "Babel" by Jim Neel). You will just have to check out their website and then visit in person at your first opportunity.
Remember, this is the same institution that is saving the Mary Nohl house and garden, the James Tellen's "Woodland Sculpture Garden", Kenny Hill's "Garden of Salvation in Chauvin, LA along with many others. It is without hesitation that we offer our highest recommendations and think it should serve as a role model for similar art communities' development and art advocacy in general. We were awed by the commitment of this very active organization.
In the photos below you will see the museum's exterior, the art of Carl Peterson in the garden and a couple random shots. Also you will see some work from the James Tellen environment a few miles outside of town in a peaceful forest.

The many hours we spent at the Art Center were capped off by a healthy and yummy lunch in the cafe...... ah the good life!

Love and smiles of awe,

Rodney and Susan
