2010/06/11 Day 54

Odda-watchers,

This day was all about kicking back. We caught up on emails and reading. There were naps, good eats and then it was time to go for a bit of hike in a very non-New Mexico environment. Our hostesst with mostest and concierge, Elaine took us took to Assateague Park and Beach.

There is one very special aspect to this area...... the Wild Ponies of Assateague. Apparently left behind by long ago explorers or settlers or survivors of shipwrecks, this barrier island has become the home to 100-200 small wild horses. As you will see below, they are about as "wild" as the deer at our campsite. The visitors are strongly discouraged (major fines will ensue) from touching the equine sunbathers. Rather remarkable creatures and there is something very surreal about horses lying inches from the crashing waves of the Atlantic. Hmmm? I sense a potential painting brewing.

After a little washing off of the sand and salt, we headed to nearby Berlin for a stroll around during the Second Saturday Art Walk. We saw some very nice traditional art -- everything seems a bit "traditional" given the art marvels we have seen recently. There were actually a couple of excellent pieces that are on the wish list of these wandering aficionados. Then it was home to partake in some serious Olympic level crumble crust apple pie we picked up at a new bakery. Oh Lordy it was yummy; it became breakfast too.

Day 54 extended into 55. So, this message contains a few pics from the morning as we left the confines of my sweet friend's wonderful home. If we stayed much longer, we may have just moved our stuff in. It's safe to say that Susan can call Elaine a new friend and we hope she comes for a visit to New Mexico sometime soon. Note: in the pics below you'll see the Wild Dogs of Ocean City, Weegee and Max. They're a fun pair. The cats were camera shy but we'll miss those affection freaks as well.

Love and beach bum ponies,

Rodney and Susan
