2010/06/17 Day 61

Oddasee Onlookers,

There are days that touch our hearts. There are days that fill our eyes. There are days that simply offer more questions than answers. Then there are days that are just plain silly......
Day 61 was just such a day.

With a bit of forethought and a liberal dose of "what the hell", we set off for a minor distraction. This place just happened to be somewhat between where we were and where we wanted to end up. In what was anything but a straight line and after a phone call for assistance, we found "The Road Kill Cafe". Yes this was intent not accident.
When we pulled up, it took a sharp eye to determine if we had actually found the culinary hot spot of our dreams. Sadly, the outside did not offer much visual reward nor did it set us off in a drool inducing desire to go inside. After some hesitation, we put on our Oddasee hats and ventured forth. The interior was just as un-inspirational. The concept of a "roadkill" cafe struck us that there were some great potential marketing and packaging options. Instead the reality was....... yawn/snooze/ho-hum. So we started finding the place unintentionally amusing. We started relishing the absurdity of it all. The resultant photos are campy but oh so real. Don't expect any art wonders or high society but what you will see are snippets of Americana and haute cuisine at it's best.
Note to BASIA and LORI: Take a very deep breath before looking at the pics below. You may not be able to handle the ones from our cafe excursion. We warned you....

Next in what was a drive down the back roads of back roads, we were off on a quest to see a collection of roadside attraction sculptures that have barely a road in sight. The goal? The Farnham Colissi outside, way outside, of Unger, (really we can't make this stuff up) West Virginia. Well after feeling lost once again, we came around the proverbial corner to see the now undeniable destination of our day's "must see".
Wowie Zowie! Look at that! It was a yard filled with every standard roadside gargantuan advertisement "sculpture" that has been produced for decades. There were various "Muffler Men" with various alterations. There was a huge grocer. A shark and a beach dude. There was a very shiny "Babe" (looks like a hooker Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis). There were many inexplicable creatures and even a private roller coaster surrounded by various lawn/garden/pond ornamental statuary. All was very silly and with seemingly no thought about placement. It was a smile and head scratching festival.

      A fun day indeed!

Love with gravy and enormous perfectly proportioned fiberglass shiny breasts -- figure out who is who.....

ps. Really... you healthy and nutrition devotees really may want to divert your eyes when you scroll down the first few pics.

note: there are a couple of random photos from along the way.
