2010/06/14 Day 57 part2

Oddfellows and Oddgals,

This is part two of “Castle Day”. We started with a visit to one of Rodney’s “must see” picks, The Mercer Museum. This has been a lust worthy goal for years. The castle like museum is mind-boggling. There is so much to see that our initial investigations of 90+ minutes was nowhere near adequate. After being blown away by Mr. Mercer’s home at Fonthill, we had to return to his museum for another couple of hours. Yep, we spent close to four hours in this man’s private collection. Note: this is but about 25% of his total collection.
The Mercer was built specifically to house his vast variety of objects. His goal was to honor and preserve the lifestyle that was uniquely American and particularly during the colonial years through the mid-1800’s. There are rooms devoted to numerous vocations such as: broom makers, potters, blacksmiths, armors, pharmacists, watch-makers, silversmiths, light-makers, bakers and on and on. In addition to the work places, there are collections of farm implements and a boiler plates. There are examples of his ceramic works spread throughout.
Yet another eye and history fest..... truly awesome and overwhelming. Far too many photos to share. So, even though this is the second part of Day 57’s email message, it still barely scrapes the surface of this unique museum. Highly recommended in every way. Doylestown itself was also a highlight of our trip. We both expressed the desire to return for a more extended stay.

Note: The last pic is quintessential Susan - arms folded and reading the labels. She's a full tilt history sponge. It's amazing. Rodney runs around with his A.D.D. visually voracious appetite and Susan gets all the info. What teamwork.
It's a marvel.
