Day 109

Oddaseekers,

As we stay true to our mission, we once again find ourselves in the backyard of many of you Colorado Oddasee followers -- Bishop's Castle in Wetmore, the Prison Museum in Canon City and the Tower Museum in Genoa. Another appropriate site is one that some of you have passed by for years....... The May Natural History Museum just south of Colorado Springs on Highway 115 toward Florence. You know the spot..... That giant beetle up on a hill.

1. The May Museum:  This little museum is small in scale and focused on small critters but is certainly big in scope.  Mr. May was more than just a little "buggie".  His collection is vast and represents a lifetime of obsession.  The insects on display are far more impressive than those at the Insectarium in Philadelphia or the City Museum in St. Louis.  There are thousands of butterflies, moths, beetles, millipedes, scorpions (some are 9" long), centipedes and spiders (Susan's fave).  Some of these creepy crawlies are unsettlingly huge -- "Eww! Geez, what the hell is that?  Holy Mother of all that is sacred, please tell me that friggin' thing doesn't live in our town!"  The shivers of spider hairs was equaled by the beauty of the butterflies. We recommend a visit for young and old.
Note: one of the most dangerous critters, the Brown Recluse, is so unimpressive in appearance and size that it's hard to believe it's such a terrorizer.

2. As part of our admission fee to the May Bug Museum, we could also go to the "Space Museum" a short walk across the adjacent field/parking lot.  We figured, "Why not?". Well as we trekked onward with our eyes now paranoid at what might be lingering in every tree or under every rock, we were greeted by a highly professional sign that guided us to the "museum".  Okay, our expectations were low but they were not low enough.  This sad little snoozer is not much more than news articles, photographs and models.  Even if we were not such "seasoned museum rats", this was pathetic. ZZZZZzzzzzzzzz.  We were completely understruck.
Note: Our home is not far from the New Mexico Museum of Space History in Alamogordo.  R. has been there and S. has not but if she can be convinced after this bad example, hopefully this will be a destination in the future. The last pic is from the NM museum not the 8th grade science project found near the May Museum.

Love and arachnophobia,

Rodipede and Little Miss Muffet Susan -- (BTW - What the heck is a tuffet?)
