2010/05/09 Day 20

Yo Odd-artsters,

The only planned and date specific part of Oddasee was the Art Car Parade in Houston. Well, today was the big day. We headed off early to lay claim to a spot along the Allen Parkway for the 1:00pm start. We had a great time just watching people and as the crowd built over the two hours, time passed quickly.

The parade began right on time and exceeded or hopes and expectations. It was a wild ride (so to speak) and time flew by as we watched all 299 entries. Some were rolling sculptures, some had crazy paint jobs and others were engineering feats of wonder. The crowds "oohed and awed" with each new vehicle appeared in the rolling gallery. It would be hard to pick favorites. Everyone was having a grand old time; participants and spectators alike. Pretty sedate and mostly political view free. The goal was art not opinion and causes; that was a nice side bonus.

There were many categories for voting - cars, motorcycles, bikes and many more. There should have been a way to acknowledge unique costumes and even one for spectators that made questionable fashion selections. See a few examples below.

Highway madness aside, our visit to Houston was great. Our art car quest/dream was fulfilled. We saw some great museums, found outsider sites and discovered many surprises as well.

Tomorrow will be the time to leave Texas in our rearview mirror as we head off to new horizons in our reliable but under embellished Toyota truck - hmmm maybe we should pick up some silicone glue and get creative.

Love and Art Auto-Lust,

Rodney & Susan

ps. Day 20 included over 250 photographs and yet another visit from our traveling companion, The Angel of Surreality. There was no way to get all the pics and stories into one email. So, Part Two to follow in the morning.
