2010/05/23 Day 34

Odd Fellows & Gals,

Day 34 was not one of grand visions or of meeting awe inspiring humans. Some days are dominated by long drives and excursions that do not fulfill our hopes. Even after extensive research, when we arrive at some destinations we are disappointed. There are many times when we drive many miles and wind down back roads with little or no signage mixed in with bad directions and routes that have changed to come upon.... nothing. Things change. People move. People die. Greed wins out. The next collection of box stores moves in.

The Oddasee spirit is one of exploration. We must enjoy the journey and relish the treasures found. There have been times when we have succumbed to traditional tourism but mostly we are just not that interested. As mentioned in earlier messages, it appears that many of the things and people we are getting to see are truly endangered. It will not be long before much of these wondrous sights will be gone.

Today sums up the true nature of our curious trek:
There are many recurring realities along our path. Two particular areas of redundancy are the ubiquitous "Historic Homes" and the "Automobile Collections". It seems these two groups are to be found in many communities large and small around the USA . The historic homes/museums really do cover quite the range from the intensely ho-hum (Orman Mansion) to the incredible (Marland Mansion). The auto museums are fairly similar with slight variance in scale and/or bent. Yesterday presented us with one of each of these not rare opportunities.
The historic home was a beautiful but just not exceptional nor particularly historic.
The auto museum was huge. We decided against forking over the $15 each. Instead, far down the highway we found a field of rusting Detroit iron..... far more interesting. That pretty much sums up the Oddasee spirit -- old rust buckets abandoned but bursting with photo potential vs some rich guy's collection of Ferraris, Cords and Batmobiles.

Below you will find but a few pics as today was mostly about covering some ground. We did seek out a couple of outsider sites along the way but they had disappeared into the past. We are not jaded but it is safe to say that impressing us takes more than packaging and hype. We did find a huge Uncle Sam.

The best news is, we are loving the ride.

Love and commitment to the odd, quirky, weird, unique and rare,

Rodney and Susan
